100,000 Floors to Play On

Habitat for Humanity International is on a mission to replace 100,000 dirt floors with concrete by 2028—and thanks to an amazing group of volunteers, we knocked out twelve of those in Chimaltenango, Guatemala!

It might sound like a small change, but unpaved floors can seriously impact a family’s health. Dirt floors are breeding grounds for parasites, bacteria, and insects that lead to major illnesses—especially for kids. Respiratory disease is common, and studies show dirt floors can even affect cognitive development in children.

Guatemala is a beautiful country with volcanoes everywhere you look—including a few that towered over our build site. After finishing our week of work, we took on one last challenge: hiking Volcano Acatenango, elevation 13,044 feet. Our legs were wrecked for a week, but it was totally worth it.

It was an unforgettable experience—hard work, good people, and a reminder that something as simple as a floor can make a huge difference.
